■概要 Summary

The Japanese video game Space Invaders (スペースインベーダ, 1978), famous in the history of video games for its notorious difficulty and its infinite loop structure that enables gamers to play hours on end, had a cultural impact around the world. In both Japan and South Korea, the game was a cultural sensation. The myth of the 100-yen coin going out of existence due to the game’s popularity travelled to South Korea where the game instantiated the first game boom. By adopting the concept of the screen in media studies, this talk examines the game as a screen object that performed four functions across the two regions: filter (sieve), division, camouflage, and shelter. I will examine these four screen functions of the game against the historical context of the two regions where leisure culture and an emphasis on science and technology were rapidly developing throughout the 1960s to 1970s.
